For two weeks now I have been suffering from an acute migraine at the back of my head. I went into hospital for tests and a CAT scan which thankfully didn't show up anything sinister (and reassured me that I actually have a brain! LOL).
However, they couldn't do anything about the pain. They gave me 2 different types of painkiller, one of which worsened the problem and had me being sick all day. A friend on Tribe suggested Turmeric, which has lessened the pain, but hasn't got rid of it.

Any tips or suggestions would be helpful, as I can't take much more of this permanent migraine.

Thank you and blessings to you all, Michy

Even herbs that aid in the supression of cortisol (the fat-inducing stress hormone) would be interesting. I've not read about such herbs, save for a very peripheral treatment, in any of my books at hand. So, if anyone lists any herbs that they know of, please cite your sources! (I'd love to hunt them down and add 'em to my own personal Library!) Though, two herbs that I routinely see cited for weight loss (but not WHY) are dandelion and chickweed.

I am very dilligent about this kind of thing and have never had to deal with this before. I have eliminated any obvious food source, stored everything else in the freezer and am certain they are coming in through the owner's side, who do not really deal with them. This kind of moth eats your food and doesn't care about cedar. I need something to use as a deterrent and heard bay leaves are the old remedy. Has anyone tried bay leaf essential oil? how about eucalyptus? I am trying *so hard* to catch and not to kill them, but I am catching, like, a dozen every day. thanks :)

i also got poison oak on my neck and face at the same time.

it seemed to be clearing up and then i got a sunburn and it got bad again.

at times my throat glands have been quite swollen. that makes sense. and probably i have had a low grade fever.

i am puzzled that my thyroid seems swollen.

now it seems to be passing -- but my skin is dry, flakey, very itchy, red, and still swollen. the patches of excema and poison oak are not really visible. I have alot of thirst - probably drinking more water than i ever have. and i am peeing alot in the night.

the other thing that happened is a year ago i got bitten by a tick and the spot on my neck where i was bitten was red when this all started.

i am curious what has been going on with my body and if other people have insight?

as far as topical salves and ointments - they have not been helpful. a good oil balm, with no herbs was good.
i have been drinking licorice tea but if it were effective- i would have needed to make it far stronger than i have (eg. an hour of brewing didn't really do anything, maybe 10 hours would do it)

a steroid cream did help, but not at the beginning.

once i got a steroid shot and that really helped, but i have not gone that route this time.

to me, it seems like my histamines are out of whack. it is worse at night. the worst night was the day after the sunburn and my whole body was on fire internally. exercise is relieving - and i think this is partly that the fight or flight is helpful.

Greetings. This came to mind from another thread. I wanted to start a dialogue about choosing a health care practitioner. I wanted to see how others do this. I personally like to interview the person, get a sense of what their background is, ask them questions about their experience, about who they collaborate with etc. I believe it is my right and responsibility to choose the health care practiioner of my choice.

Throughout the world there are trends to eliminate through licensure and legislation as well heresy to eliminate traditional health care practitioners. I feel sad and unsettled by this, as it has the capacity to create a monocultured health care system. Even many natural health care providers are tending to be encapusulated into a western pharmaceutical framework of practice and personally I would like more diverse health care options.

How do you choose a health care practitioner? How do you feel about freedom of choice in health care?
Blessings

I have been extremely down but I am started having cycles again about 6 weeks pp. They have been fairly regular, but it seems the symptoms aren't going away. I thought when my period returns I wouldn't have so many problems. I feel like I cannot be a whole, healthy mother for my beautiful baby right now. I need help. Today i visited my acupuncturists and because we are in CA, he cannot prescribe herbs to me because I am still Breastfeeding and because of liability issues. HELP! What kinds of herbs can I take during pregnancy? I used to take Zhi Bo Di Huang Wan and Zi Shen Yu Tai Wan and another Chinese herbal combo called Happy days, all from treasure of the East. My Acu said that my Kidney yin was 100%, but Kidney Yan, only 30%. he also said my adrenal was down. I want to order these herbs online, but I don't know which ones are safe to use during breastfeeding. My acu can't tell i am so desperate for help, I would appreciate any help, thank you.

p.s. I also have low milk supply (especially around menstruation) in lactation and I find Mother's Milk tea help just a little.

Improper "Big Pharma" Influence in Medicine is VERIFIED!
This is a BIG step in the right direction for health care in the USA! It has been no secret, but no one was talking about it since the monetary benefits that many doctors are receiving from these companies made this unlikely. I mean - if you were the type to only care about money (which is why many become doctors in the first place), wouldn't you want a free trip to Cancun by putting other people on basically unproven and even harmful chemical substances?

Catherine D. De Angelis, MD, MPH and Phil B. Fontanarosa, MD, MBA have submitted this timely (and likely unwelcome) article into the April 16, 2008 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), entitled "Impugning the Integrity of Medical Science - the Adverse Effects of Industry Influence."

What is even more awesome is that this was broadcast on the same day on the morning edition of Talk Radio's "Paul Harvey" show, so this information has come to the attention of many Americans today!

I am happy to see that some doctors do in fact have some integrity. This may also be an opening for safer alternative methods to be approved by the AMA for doctors to use and not feel like they will have their medical licensing taken away if they recommend a proven herbal remedy (as an example) instead of the new designer drugs of the day. I hope this allows them the courage to step forward now that the door has been opened!

We can help by showing this to our medical providers (if you have those) this article, and telling them about this, they can maybe take additional steps as doctors to become more able to practice alternative and natural techniques without risking their careers. Also, tell your friends in any way you can, so that they can demand alternative therapies be implemented or they will go elsewhere now that this article ought to free up other practitioners to use these methods. This also provides some validation for Alternative practitioners who have known about these dangers all along. Health care freedom (and responsibility) is up to all of us - please spread the message!

I am just now recovering from nearly five days of being severely ill with what I originally thought was food poisoning. Turns out that something very similar to what I've had has been going around, so perhaps it wasn't something I picked up from not washing a strawberry. Be aware, friends, and wash your hands more than normal. It's a nasty one...

Anywho, I basically went for 3 days without eating anything but a pear and a piece of toast and a lot of water. My stomach is obviously pretty tender and I'm wondering if any of you have experience in restoring digestive balance with herbs. I am doing acidopholis but it seems like there is another medicine from the plant world that my body is asking for. Anyone have any ideas?

I think I will start with a huuuuuge pot of nettle tea.

happy spring to y'all...

Anyway, when it's ready to harvest in a couple months, I'd like to infuse it in order to make some use of it. Hence, because my brother's birthday is in June, as is Father's Day, I would love to make both he and my dad some lavender shaving cream this June! Anyone got any shaving cream formulas that the men in your lives seem to especially love?! ;o)

Hello wise-peeps. I just started a cleanse/detox, using a formula-kit by Michael's Naturopathic. A little background: I am an avid coffee drinker...have been for years. Over the past year, I have been through an incredibly difficult emotional ride...long story short, broke up with my partner and I moved out with our young son. I have variable issues with chronic pain in my upper back/headaches/joint pain. I have had great success with homeopathy (see a homeopath regularly), and I also have a great chiropractor/cranial sacral genie. I typically eat quite well, green veggies and good proteins often, but I do have a sugar habit.
After the holidays, my birthday, work, etc, I was drinking a lot of coffee... and it has kinda stopped working. This weekend, it hit me. I'm tired all the time even with 11 hours sleep, I hurt a lot, my skin is bad, dark circles are bad, and my energy is kaput.
So, the cleanse. Trouble is, I can't quit caffeine cold-turkey. Today, I waited until noon...and I gave in because the headache was pretty bad. I expect the detox will make everything hurt temporarily, but damn. This sucks.
I don't want to quit coffee forever...it's one of my remaining pleasures! But I do need to back-off for the next few weeks.
Advice? Herbs I can take concurrently? Is it "ok" to have one small cuppajava a day during a cleanse? I know, it's not ideal...but the headache has got to go. I'm going to make some Oatstraw infusion, just to assist the flushing, but what else will help?
Any tips greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Codex Alimentarius” means “food rules” in Latin. The organization was born in 1962 when the UN established the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) as a “Trade Commission”. It was created to regulate, and thus control, every aspect of how food and nutritional supplements are produced and sold to the consumer. It is solely about trade and the profits of multi-national corporations.

The more natural health products people use, the fewer drugs they use. Millions are turning to natural health. Big Pharma fears this as it would diminish profits. Codex is designed to protect Big Pharma profits by eliminating natural health products and treatments. Health food stores and wellness companies would be hit hard.

Codex is unscientific because it classifies nutrients as toxins and uses “Risk Assessment” to set ultra low so-called “safe upper limits” for them. Risk Assessment is a branch of Toxicology, the science for assessing toxins. The proper science for assessing nutrients is Biochemistry. Codex does not use Biochemistry.

Codex is based on the Napoleonic Code, dating back to Bonaparte. Under this code, anything not explicitly permitted is automatically forbidden. Under Common Law (our system), something does not have to be explicitly permitted to be legal. The tyrannical Napoleonic Code allows the banning of natural health options by default.

Codex will go into global effect on December 31, 2009, unless we, the People, take action and avert it. Right now, we are like a frog boiled slowly, the heat raised gradually so we won’t jump out of the water. The media is used to make us believe that Codex is about “consumer protection”. Part of the media strategy is to tarnish the image of natural health options, through for-hire studies.

One-time defenders of supplements and nutritional products, such as the National Nutritional Foods Association (NNFA) and Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), have fallen prey to new pharmaceutical members and are spreading disinformation saying that Codex is “consumer protection”. Their boards used to be run by health freedom fighters.

The U.S. has a powerful legal tool for health freedom: the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), passed in 1994 after massive grass-roots action. DSHEA scientifically classifies nutritional supplements as food and prevents dosage restrictions; Codex unscientifically classifies them as toxins and sets ultra-low doses. The VMG violates U.S. law because it violates DSHEA. We must unite to protect DSHEA, our best legal defense against Codex.

The pharmaceutical industry works through irresponsible/corrupt politicians to do their bidding. The path to institute Codex in America is to “influence” Congress to pass laws friendly to drugs and unfriendly to nutritional supplements, so that slowly everyone comes to believe that nutrients are “dangerous”, and drugs are “proper medicine”. Susan Davis (D, CA) and other politicians are helping Big Pharma by supporting bills designed to destroy DSHEA.

Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) has two committees which impact nutrition.

One of them, the “Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses” (CCNFSDU), is chaired by Dr. Rolf Grossklaus, a physician who believes that nutrition has no role in health. This is the “top-guy” for Codex nutritional policy, and he has stated that “nutrition is not relevant to health”.

As unbelievable as it may sound, Dr. Grossklaus actually declared nutrients to be toxins in 1994 and instituted the use of toxicology (Risk Assessment) to prevent nutrients from having any impact on humans who take supplements! It is worth mentioning that Dr. Grossklaus happens to own the Risk Assessment company advising CCNFSDU and Codex on this issue. This company makes money when its toxicology services are used for the “assessment” of nutrients. Here in the U.S. we call that a “conflict of interest”.

Codex is made up of thousands of standards and guidelines. One of them, the Vitamin and Mineral Guideline (VMG), is designed to permit only ultra low doses of vitamins and minerals (and make clinically effective nutrients illegal). How can the VMG restrict dosages of vitamins and minerals? By using Risk Assessment (toxicology) to assess nutrients.

While Risk Assessment is a legitimate science (it is a branch of toxicology), it is the wrong science for assessing nutrients! In fact, in this context, it is actually junk science. Biochemistry, the science of life processes, is the correct science for assessing nutrients. Codex Alimentarius treats nutrients as toxins, which is literally insane.

Nutrients are not toxins - they are essential for life!!

Under Codex all nutrients and herbs are labelled as toxic and will be illegal.(as illegal as heroin) Canada is required to comply with codex by DEC.31 2009 or the WTO which implements Codex will put up trade sanctions against Canada. We must not let Codex get implemented. We need to start sending letters and getting petitions signed NOW to stop Codexs standards from being implemented here in Canada and the rest of the world. I came across the Clayton College of Natural Health, which is a distance learning center with a mass of what seems to be incredible classes to offer. The only problem is that Clayton College is also one of those unaccredited (except by places such as the American Herbalist Guild and American Association of Drugless Practioners, which really aren't accrediters, just associations that think Clayton College is swell probably because they get paid by the college to do so) degree mill type institutions. While the class work looks great, I am worried about what would happen later in life when I have just a phony piece of paper saying I paid too much to gather knowledge.

So my question for all of you, are any of you licensed practitioners? Where did you go to school? How did you like it?

My issue currently is I fear settling down (I travel constantly) and would really love to be able to do distance learning, but is distance learning really the best way to learn things like holistic healing? Maybe one of you will help me find my way...

I have started a new tribe: Herbal Wisdom. The intent of this tribe is to focus on promoting health and creating deep nourishment.

Herbs can be nourishing, stimulating and or poisonous depending on the plant, how it is prepared and what part of the plant one uses. I hope that we can focus on primarily the nourishing plants and their preparation. They create deep healing and often are all that is needed.

This is a difficult paradigm in our culture because we always want to fix something right away with stimulatiion. When sometimes all that is needed is a gentle touch, patience and rest.

I hope this tribe will provide support for exploration of deep nourishment and that we can encourage each other to make this enlivening shift.

Settle somethin' for me, would ya'? Now, common sense informs me that in order to extract the perfume from an herb of flower it must be fresh; but, is this 100% accurate across the board, or may the scent of an herb be extracted with alcohol as a tincture using a dried flower? And, if it is simply not possible to extract a scent from a flower with alcohol, I'd love to investigate the science behind scent in this regard.

Also, when making Tinctures for medicinal purposes--because drying an herb certainly alters its chemical structure--are any medicinal properties lost within herbs during this process, or not? And, if some herbs tend to loose most of their medicinal potency in their dried form, how does one (interested in the Path of the Wise Man/Cunning Man and Medicinal Herbalism as I am) which herbs do and do not? Is there any handy literature I ought to invest in to really keep up with this line of investigation?

Oh, and when tincturing a resin, should it be ground into a powder, or does is matter whether it's powdered or in a more whole, or "teared" and chunky form?

Oh, and speaking of medicinal herbalism, can anyone recommend any vastly well thought out books re: the use of some very popular medicinal herbs that also discuss using dried v. fresh herbs, because none of the books I own really discuss the use of fried herbs, unless when explaining that it may be used as a tea, rather than if dried herbs may be employed in some other form, such as in making a syrup, ointment, oil, vinegar, lozenges, et al. Heck, sometimes they aren't quite specific enough. For example: in my copy of John Lust's "The Herb Book", he doesn't explain which speacies of Echinacea is the medicinal one [he merely lists, as to others, "Echinacea spp."] when many variant species of plants really don't hold the same (or nearly as bountiful) medicinal virtues; nor do they explain what portion of many various medicinal plants are to be harvested and employed in the many types of medicinal herbalism: with re: the Echinacea, would it be the root, leaf, flower petals, or stiff seeds? This was sadly not mentioned, as I seem to recall... As a result, many herbals seem to be written as if everyone reading them has limitless access to masses of fresh herbs, when practically most generally have access to large quantities of dried herbs. Now, I would LOVE to grow huge quantities of fresh herbs and flowers for use in herbal medicines, but...when I move I will have no access to any sort of communal gardening land (living in a city), being that I've already checked into this (well, that is to say I've enquired of several people working for the city, and never recieved a single responce, which was weird).

Although, I still want to indepthy research the medicinal properties of plants, particularly the list given in Green's "The Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook"! But, the books presently on my library only offer a very limited and *brief* monograph or excerpt for each herb listed; while, many aren't quite as focussed or as user-friendly as Lust's text, unfortunately. I, for one, want to know all of the uses for an herb, and the studies and history behind an herb being used as such. What chemicals cause these medicinal reactions? But, I recall reading an herbal written by an herbalist that wasn't as user-friendly as what I am looking for: while it gave the chemical compositions, it wasn't really very practical in scope: "Medical Herbalism", by David Hoffman; by contrast (albeit potentially lethal, 'cause...my momma' didn't raise no fool!) anthropologist Christian Ratsch's "The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants" was far more practical in scope.

For example, what I find fascinating (and what I would like to read more about) how an herb works for it's medicinally-listed properties. A while back I was chatting with a medicinal herbalist I know, and we were talking "shop", when she mentioned to me that pukeweed can be used to stop the smoking addiction, because it contains a chemical that latches onto the erve-receptors in our brains and does not allow the nicotine to take hold!

Please, if you would, substantiate all statements with reference citations. ;o) I ask only bcause as a historian, I have been justifiably burned by scholars who have written with such an "authoritative voice" that they mislead their readers into believing that they speak for all academia; couch their personal opinions as facts; misrepresent their sources; and make unsubstantiated claims, etc. As a result, I have become quite jaded, I'm afraid. So, I've come to require some substantive evidence these days...

All my best,
Wade MacMorrighan

i've had good results with: kratom, scullcap, chasteberry, kava, damiana, passion flower, valerian, chamomile, hops, lobelia, mugwort.

for focus/stamina: ginkgo, rhodiola, ginseng, gotu kola, yerba mate.

i want to make these blends potent, pleasant, and healthy. so i'm interested in what your experiences have been with any of these herbs, health concerns, what's good for smoking.
what other herbs are worth trying? i'm interested in a wide range of effects. flavours?

Earths polar opposite will enter the space between the earth and the sun on the 22 of December. Leading up to t his event earthquakes and floods will continue to increase as the earth vibrates due to the close encounter with this other celestial body sometimes refered to as Niburu. As earth has a postitive chage this celestial body that we are encountering will have a negative charge, and it will absorb the sun light for the space of 3 days. On the morning of December 25 the sun will reappear and all will know know that the sequence has begun. Polar shifts, continental shifts, all in the forcast, causing land mass to change s we know it.

Greetings all!

Just a short note to introduce myself: I am an artist and vet tech who lives in NYC and practices garden herbalism in my teeensy backyard, as well as other "rural" and/or "sustainable" methods of living. This has made for an awesome and rewarding life in an otherwise hectic life.

It occurred to me, after discussing issues of "green living" and simple living with my fellow frazzled New Yorkers, to create an online magazine to expound on several aspects of bringing the country/green life to urban areas. Accordingly, I am looking for people to eventually contribute articles about this issue. You can see a verrrrry early (and under construction) version up at BigTownFarmer.com
Anyhow...hopefully this doesn't sound too spammy, as I would like to correlate some of this work to this board, but I am not sure....in the meantime, I am currently looking for someone who would like to write about all natural winter beauty products. You may email me for more details if you are interested

I also had a question myself...for awhile, I've had good success with herbs in the garden but was intrigued when a friend mentioned creating a "fall herbal garden". Is there really such a thing? New York gets pretty cold, so I couldn't imagine growing anything hardy enough to withstand the weather past mid-Oct. My only guess might be Rosemary, as it's a bush, but otherwise, I wouldn't know what would grow, without a greenhouse, at this time of year.

Any and all advice is much appreciated!

Hey guys, here's something of an "odd" question:

I was wondering if anyone has any advice for designinf labels (as in software, perhaps) for my jars of herbs? I was thinking of a nice, ornate, boarder for each label, with the "common name" and "botanical name" written in a lovely font, with images of the the plant, itself, asthetically placed around the words-- such as leaves, flower tops, roots, trees, seeds, etc. But, these images will ne somewhat "faded", or "lightened" for asthetic purposes. Anyone got any ideas of advice? I can "see" what I want to accomplish, but it's all a matter of finding what is required to "manifest" those results. Ya' know what I mean? ;o) The reason why I ask is because I've found some lovely bottles, and I think I should extend more "loveliness" to their labels, as well...

lots of seeds, would love to utilize them more. I know that Donald Yance has put burdock

Opium Poppy Busts?!

Hey guys, I have a question for ya' (so I'll really need to make use of your memory, or computer-search skills!): Do either of you remember reading (in The Des Moines Register), within the last 2 or 3 years (I think), about a woman from China living in Iowa (Des Moines?) who was busted merely for growing opium poppies! I ask for two reasons: 1.) I was told by someone living in San Francisco that it's not ilegal to grow them (apparently there's a whole opium poppy festival in that town!); and 2.) I would like to grow them in order to extract the resin [opium] for religious use in incense, etc. And, heck, the petals would be a lovely bonus-- I can't find any local suppliers that sell poppy petals of any species! I also want to write an entire article about the opium poppy, so I want to THOROUGHLY research all the legalities surrounding it. The guy from San Francisco said that it was only illegal to actually sell the opium resin [extracted from scoring the "poppy fruit" after the petals have wilted], and that opium poppy seeds are openly sold at Lowells and the Home Depot. (I have no intention of selling it...) After all, I wouldn't want to get busted just for growing the poppy (which cannot easily be differentiated from other species). So, I'm curious about the specific charges levied against this woman (or others), and the Prosicution's case against her (and others)! Hmmm...I wonder if it's possible to find trial transcripts without a docket #? Also, according to my S.F. acquaintence, opium poppy seeds are usually radiated so that they cannot create opium until the 3rd or 4th generation (because it's an annual, you'll have to collect the seeds from each year's yield to replant each 3 or 4 successive years)!

Thanks a heap! I tried searching DesMoinesRegister.Com for "opium" to no avail, even googling this search thread!
What about the cultivated varieties? I'm thinking of growing some next year in the small plot of land behind my apt. But, I'm worried about them growing out of control, and pissing all of my neighbors off (city folk around here seem to regard many plants and flowers as "weeds"!); and I'm also interested in looking for some native Greek species, if at all possible. Besides, I can't get any of my local occult stores to carry poppy petals, damn it! ;o)

I am wondering if any one has any idea as to what I can do for my self to overcome this disfunction. I am currently taking a multi and mag/cal reverse ratio, pantothinic acid and B complex. I have made an herbal mixtute of three parts. 1.Austragulus, valarian, siberian gensing, and licorise. 2.St. johns wart, ginkco. lemon balm, scullcap, chamamile, oat straw. 3.Spiriment, chamimile, and hybiscus. The last set is just to make it taste yummy. I do physical therapy too. It is the nervous system overreacting and affects my circulation. The body does not recieve enough oxygen either. I know it is rare, but if any one has either known someone, or has worked with someone , please let me know what you or they have tried that seemed to work. Thank you and blessing.
