Re: Question about Comfrey root tincture
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 9:22 AMHi Brian,
I have heard that for plant with high muscilagenous qualities, use a ratio of more water than alcohol...Sharol Tilgner's book, Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth has a great section where so suggests alcohol/water ratios. She was an herbal crafter and owner of Wise Woman Herbals for many years. www.herbaltransitions.com/index.html

Re: Question about Comfrey root tincture
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 10:50 AMI also like james Green's "Herbal medicine Makers Handbook." I have the old edition...he says that comfrey and other mucilagionous herbs turn nto something that looks like slugs in alcohol.I wonder whetehr it would work to juice the whole fresh root and then combine the resulting juice with brandy o other highquality alcohol to preserve? never tried it; I only use comfrey root externally at this poin except for an occasional chop on a fresh root 9had lover hwo was really, really into eating it), and for preservation purposes I make an oil-based salve.

Re: Question about Comfrey root tincture
Mon, October 20, 2008 - 11:06 AMI am in the process of learning as much about herbs as I can and my current focus in tincturing. I have an abundance of comfrey and had read that the root can be tinctured so I want to do so. I am aware of the pyrrolizidine alkaloids controversy and will use this tincture ONLY in rare cases through the skin when it is best choice available.
