Reactive Hypoglycemia

topic posted Wed, March 19, 2008 - 3:53 AM by  Cas
My son (25) has just been diagnosed with the above after the 5 hour blood test ...

Besided cutting out all the sugars from his diet and taking in more protein in the mornings - can anyone suggest what else he should be doing to address this issue?

His sister (36) has diabetes 2 and my father had diabetes 1 and died at the age of 51! My dad always said it would come out in his grandchildren - He now has 6 and he only got to meet one of them!

Someone told me cinamon is good but I am yet to find out how it needs to be taken and how often and what it does?

Thanks in advance ...

Cas

Any help appreciated

Hmmm, Cinnamon is a new one to me. I have heard Turmeric is a gentle herb that helps the Pancreas, but it also helps the Liver, Lungs, and joint issues - and even the colon to some degree. It is present in Curry Powder. Just add Turmeric or Curry Powder to his foods, and chances are he will like it. Also, look into his water - distilled or reverse osmosis/spring water is best. So many health troubles clear up with the right choice of water. For sweetener for him, I recommend Stevia. No chemical sweeteners, aspartame is total poison. My herbal school taught me for both types of diabetes ZERO Dairy, period! There is evidence that dairy along with vaccinations have huge ties to autism and type I diabetes. Go super-easy on the meats, and proteins are abound in vegetable sources. Regardless, make sure they are as organic as you can get. Hope this helps!

Hi Cas. Reactive Hypoglycemia is a condition that can have many causes including gastritis, hypothyroidism, and hereditary fructose intolerance. However, given your family history, I would put weight to either pre-diabetes, or a hereditary enzyme deficiency.
    Professionals recommend:
-eat small meals with snacks in between (every 3 hours)
    -regular exercise
-eat a little protein with every meal; like nuts, whole grains, fish, dairy, meat, beans
-lots of fiber; whole grains, veggies, beans, fruits
-avoid food with lots of sugar (especially on empty stomach) and processed starches like white rice, wheat pasta and bread, potatoes, corn, and popcorn
    -avoid caffeine and alcohol
-and I second the lots of clean water recommendation

As for cinnamon, a good study has shown cinnamon to lower serum glucose and triglyceride levels in people with type II diabetes, and increase insulin utilization. In the study the most effective dose was 500mg capsules twice/day. New Chapter makes an ethical supplement called cinnamonforce which contains both and lipid and aqueous extracts. Although a strong tea has also been effective. I would recommend incorporating a 500mg cinnamon supplement twice per day in the morning and evening with some food, or drink a strong tea 3-4 times/ day.

There are many other herbs that are helpful for diabetes including gymnema, blueberry, hawthorn, ginkgo, dandelion, and goat's rue. Banaba, a Filipino herb, is also used with good results. Antioxidants in dark berries and green tea support the pancreas and dandelion, burdock, milk thistle, and turmeric support the liver (responsible for most insulin response). I would do a mixed herbal tea before each meal and before bed.

One more thing I can think of is to reduce stress of course. Hope this helps a bit.

    Blessings,

    Elise
