Okay everyone, I'm needing your help. My cat gave me a nasty bite last
night and it"s getting worse. I cleaned it out and have been applying
Calendula cream throughout the day. I have also had my hands in water
because I've been cleaning my carpets but I've been mindful about the
bite. The area, which is on the joint of the finger, is really
inflamed. It is also tender to the touch and I can no longer bend my
finger due to the swelling!
Any help and suggestions would be extremely appreciated. I really don't
want to have to see an M.D. or go on antibiotics if I can help it.
Note: He's a house cat and has not been outside in a long while. He is
also current with his rabies shot. Forgive my spelling ~ I'm really
poor in that area!

Sun, February 24, 2008 - 8:32 PMyes, animal bits are notorious for giving you really bad infections. Don't shy away from the antibiotics in this case.

Re: Cat Bite
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 1:00 PMDo you have plantain tincture? Use that externally on the bite (like some squirted on a cotton ball or cloth and apply until it dries, and keep doing it). Also, take some of that tincture internally along with some echinacea tincture, and eat LOTS of raw garlic (if you get gassy, eat it with fennel or ginger). Good luck! -

Re: Cat Bite
Sat, March 1, 2008 - 4:04 PMI know this is a week late but how are you??? And just for future reference:
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SCREW AROUND WITH A CAT BITE!! You must get on antibiotics IMMEDIATELY. I brought home a new 18 month old kitty that had been fully vaccinated for everything so I wasn't afraid of anything like that but he was terrified and he bit me just as you said - right at the joint of my finger. Bad. He too was a house cat but within 12 hours there was already pus coming out of it and it was the size of a sausage. The only reason I even waited a day was the fact I had an appt with my cardiologist the next morning and he freaked! Started anti's immediately and made me see my reg physician the next day. It was BAD. I started reading on the net and found that the bite of a cat is second in severity only to that of a HUMAN bite which is plagued with even more gross nasty infectious microbes and germs. Obviously, this does not mean if you get a little knick when they are playing with you you'd have to run to the ER but when they are serious and sink their teeth in, GET IMMEDIATE ATTENTION.
I sooooo hope you are 100% well and not blaming kitty since they know not what they do....
Blessings!!

Re: Cat Bite
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 8:06 PMHi "G",
You were right. It happened exactly the way you explained your episode. I did have to go on antibiotics (which I hate!) but it was necessary. the finger was extremely swollen and I lost use in it for several days! It is much better now but still has soreness at the actual entry points. I was shocked at how quickly this bite became severe. However, I did get good results from Chickweed and Agrimony as well as soaking in epsom salts but it took the antibiotics to heal the deep infection.
I still love kitty (Ollie) and we are still the best of buddies. Thaks for your "right on" information and concern.

Re: Cat Bite
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 7:20 PMI had a cat with some emotional issues who went kind of fearful-crazy on me and bit hard on my hands t wice. broke the skin significantly, really hurt, bled profusely, four separate bite sites on two hands once.
good news.neither one infected; I washed them thoroughly with warm-hot soapy water,, kept them bandaged for a couple days.er. I can sort of see one tiny scar now two years later.I .have a pretty good resistance to bacterial infection, and i think it was the washing and keeping clean that really worked for me. notevery at bite gets infected and needs abx.

Re: Cat Bite
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 2:31 PMyou were lucky. when i was bitten, it was at the joint and didn't bleed. that's when i knew it was really bad. i had to squeeze it until i could get the blood to flow out then scrubbed it with hot water and soap. i worked for a veterinarian for 4 years. surface bites bleed and a lot of the toxins come up to the surface and out. the deep ones don't get the opportunity to wash out the venom and toxins. the cat was terrified so i didn't blame him for a second but to this day - 4 years later - he can still have a pretty hateful attitude toward me and the other kitties. he talks, growls, hisses, snorts and spits more than any other cat i've been around in my whole life. but i still love him. anybody else would've not put up with him. but not everybody understands cats. i'll NEVER understand him but i respect his space.
