ther re a hunred types of arthritis, literally, and more info would be helpful.

foos thoughts: some people find eating macrobiotic, or at least no nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, tobacco though that;ls nt a fiood i hope, ) and no dairy (or at least eliminating commercial, highly processed dairy foods) and limited gluten really helps.

others find that cherries and berries are real healing foods. seaon's almost over but try black cherry concentrate or bottled cherry juicce o froen cherries.

    acupuncture and traditional/classical Chnese medicien?

again, tell us more about what type of arthritis and there is probably more we can do.

Thats right, I do remember hearing about cherries. However, I will talk to him more about it today. I think, in fact I am sure it is from old injuries and operations, hands and elbows.

A woman came to my herbal class where I was serving stinging nettle infusion.
She drank a cup and kept drinking it all day. She shared at the end of the day that after the first cup, her painful arthritic knees
stopped hurting, so she kept drinking. Nettle in anti-imflammatory.
One ounce dry of nettle per quart of boiling water. Let this steep over night.
Strain and drink, hot or cold. It makes a good base for soups.
        Peace, Julie

A friend of mine read about a study on the use of unflavored gelatin by arthritis sufferers. These were people who were in line to have surgery because their arthritis was so bad. For the study, each of them ingested two packets of unflavored gelatin a day for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, *every one* of them no longer had pain, and a few of them decided to cancel their surgery.

The friend who read this is an avid canoe racer and had some problems with joint pain. I don't know if it was arthritis or just overuse of the joints. He started using the gelatin and had dramatic improvement in lessening of pain and increased motility and strength.

He just throws the gelatin into any kind of sauce, spaghetti sauce or the like, or else stirs it into juice.

        I hope this helps.

            Gelatin contains collagen, that's why.
Funny, I have started suffering from osteoarthritis and lately had this really strong craving for shrimps in their shells (chondroithin, I found out!) and yes, cherries and berries. What is contained in cherries and berries besides polyphenol?

Also, they can put Turmeric in their diet - it helps joints, but also helps lungs, liver and pancreas! I would recommend going majorly easy on the meats too (maybe like once a week to have organic poultry or something if one must). I also know sugars upset a friend of mine's arthritis (the rheumatoid kind) - and I would think it wouldn't even be great for the osteo type since sugar eliminates our nutrition. Also, mineral-rich herbs like comfrey, alfalfa, oatstraw and lobelia may help as well (go easy on that lobelia). Things like nettle, dandelion, chickweed and other yard greens (weeds in my yard hehe) would help too! :-)

well, I;ve been vegetarian for years and I* have* read Nourishing Traditions and think much of it is inflammatory scare stuff without any good science behind it, pun only somewhat intended, abut vegetarianism. there are undoubtedly some people who do better on an omnivorous diet based on natural organic foods, such as Sally Fallon. there are some people who do splendidly well on a plant base natural foods diet. soy foods are medicine for some people, toxic to others. this can be said about many classifications of food: various meats, graiins, lipids, milk and milk products, nightshade vegetables (msot of which are botanically fruits...eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, plus potatoes whicha re really a modified, staarchy stem), salt (this one's a biggie!)mints and other aromatic herbs...and more.

my own gues is that if we did a twenty year study of one group of people who ate a balanced omnivorous diet with moderate amounts of meats and dairy products of the type suggested in Nourishing Traditions, and compared them with people eating a balanced vegetarian or even vegan diet that include a moderate amount of traditional style soy foods and even a few more recent ones...they'd both look pretty good at the end of the "day" especialy compared with people who eat a lot of processed food with multiple preservatives, synthetic food additives, etc.

ther is no one right way for everyone to eat...but Norishing Traditions and the undocumented scare stories it tells about vegetarian diets being harmful reall annoy me.

mor later. ils getting late here.

this IS one right way for people to eat judith
              get used to it

"this IS one right way for people to eat judith
                get used to it "
this is ONE right way for some people.

what am I supposed to "get used to? that people follow fads in diet? that sme folks are so ipinionated about diet that they have no manners or common sense in talking with other informed people? that you are right about everything and i could; possibly be as well informed as you? and Sallt Fallon have discovered the only ne right way to eat? sorry,

oh yeah, there's only one right way for people to eat, uh huh. everything anyone else studies or experiences if i doesn't agree with Sally Fallon is wrong. people like me, or like John Robbins, who are i the second half f life and in really good health without eating meat for decades are deluding ourselves, and so were the nearings, who live very vital lives as vegetarians until 101 and 98 respectively. one of my university training in nutrition means anythng either wither because Sally Fallon is the Messiah of nutrition and all others are praying to false gods. oh, how about jack la Lannne, 90soemthing exercise champ and health food enthusiast and, oh yes, vetan for fifty years or something? oh too bad he didn;t have Sallt Fallon to guide him, nor you...

I anticipate being 90 years old, quite likely arthritis free, enjoying my vegetarian diet with good amounts of low processed traditonal soy foods such as tofu as well as peklnty of while grains, beans, vegetables, fruits, and olive oil,, being in continued good ehalth without eating lard like Sally Fallon tells me I shouldm and having a good laugh at people like you

do;t be so bitchy o you will get it right back. i respect pepole who choose to eat a varied omnivorous whole=foods diet, and suspect they have made the right hoices for themselves. but when you, or that ridiculous cookbook auithor, start preaching to me, you do not have a receptive audience. i;ve been studying vegetarian nutrition since before a lot of the people on this list were brn, i imagine. treat my knowledge base as well as my cultural beliefs with a little respect yourself.
i;ve taken graduate elvel lasses at respected universities in public health nutrition, and earned excellent grades and recommendations from my rofessors, but I huess I sould "get used" to how one fad author knows more than anyone else.

maybe i'm jsut looking for some arrogant person to piss me off today, and you were my wining bingo card this morning.
