Re: night sweats anyone?
Sun, February 1, 2009 - 8:51 PMThey are probably peri-menopausal. The period leading up to menopause, which can last SEVERAL years--I had night sweats for about two years before I entered menopause proper.
And what do you consider too young? Women can become menopausal as early as forty and it's not considered abnormal. I started at 45. Women who don't have children (such as myself) often start much earlier than other women.
THere are several herbs good for night sweats, including black cohash. -

Mon, February 2, 2009 - 4:32 AMit can also be an anxiety thing. so working with whatever is causing anxiety can help balance out the night sweats too. I agree with the female balancing herbs...black cohosh, vitex, red raspberry leaf, red clover. I'd also ty adding passion flower and chamomile at night just to ratchet down. good liver balancers, including stinging nettles and dandelion leaf (or any part of the dandelion plant, really) are also good constititional remedies that an be really hekpful with imbalane causing night sweets...but it takes a while for them to really make some cahnges.stay away from stimulating herbs such as maca, ginseng, anything caffeine containing.
and make sure our bedroom is sufficiently cool. -

Re: night sweats anyone?
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 7:46 AMaccording to Chinese medicine, this is caused by yin deficiency, possibly kidney yin deficiency. I get it when I eat too much chocolate or hot and damp food. It could be countered by taking cooling and cleansing herbs, or better yet, yin tonics. -

Re: night sweats anyone?
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 4:53 PMIt is also a symptom of several tick-borne infections, which are known to be spreading incredibly rapidly since we've had some of the warmest years on record and they've mostly happened over the past 20 years (ie so some species of ticks are spreading to places they weren't as common before and their numbers are higher because they're not going dormant in the winter like they used to in some areas).
Other infections can cause night sweats besides tick borne infections. And, they often get mistaken for menopause- both the sweating, and a lot of other symptoms such as fatigue and pain.
Night sweats are one symptom sometimes found with LYme Disease, babesiosis (really common thing in the Northeast, huge number of people have it but most are asymptomatic, but the Red Cross is finally starting to panic about it being in the blood supply), and bartonella and ehrlichia infections.

Re: night sweats anyone?
Wed, February 4, 2009 - 12:06 AMThyroid can cause night sweats as well.
Dirty blood where the body is trying to remove toxins from the body can cause night sweats.. If a person sweats during the day, most ppl don't realize it as they're busy doing day things.
Stress can cause emotional imbalance and can also cause night sweats.
Infections, fevers, minor illnesses and numerous other things can cause night sweats. -

Re: night sweats anyone?
Wed, February 4, 2009 - 5:56 PMso, i'm curious... is it the Thyroid that regulates sweat ... day and night ... i have one friend who can not sweat ... and another friend who sweats quite excessively.... i realize there are other factors at play too ... but for the most part ... what part of the body regulates this? -

Re: night sweats anyone?
Wed, February 4, 2009 - 7:12 PMThe thyroid plays a major role in the endocrine system. It absorbs iodine from the diet and releases thyroid hormones - iodine-containing compounds that help govern the rate of the body's metabolism (its total life processes), affecting body temperature, and regulating protein, fat and carbohydrate catabolism in all cells.
They keep up growth hormone release, skeletal maturation, and heart rate, force, and output.
They promote central nervous system growth, stimulate the making of many enzymes, and are necessary for muscle tone and vigor.
To a high degree, metabolism is regulated by the hormone thyroxine, which can be made by the thyroid if enough organic iodine is available.
Because our metabolism also regulates the sweat glands, thyroid problems can be one cause, but there may be other causes as well. There are numerous reasons why someone would either sweat to excess or not at all.

Re: night sweats anyone?
Thu, February 5, 2009 - 6:51 PMEither chewing on kitchen sage or drinking a tea made from it before bed helps me usually. I take black cohosh, amongst other things and most of the time I don't have them - the times that I need something extra, the sage works great - it also works for my mom and my aunt, who have been way past menopause for many years now hehe! -

Re: night sweats anyone?
Thu, February 5, 2009 - 8:10 PMI was thrown into menapause at an early age, so went thru the premarin treatments, found out how bad it was for my health, so began poking around trying to find something that would supplement the premarin while at the same time, do the same thing and reduce or illiminate the symptoms of night sweats, attitude, hot flashes, (which, by the way, are great in the dead of winter, but horrible in the heat of summer lol ) etc.
I found an ayervedic supplement which helps. (If interested int the product name, pm me and I will discuss it further)
What it does is balance the endocrine system which helps regulate hormonal balance.
Because it helps balance the endocrine system, it also helps regulate my thyroid which is a wonderful side effect.
I have had thyroid problems for over 10 years now and the combination in this herbal supplement really works for me. I don't know how it would work on anyone else. Plus its spendy.
I have tried the sage, the black cohosh, blue cohosh, wild yam, and numerous other single herbs as well as numerous other combinations of herbs. Each herb is great. But some would alleviate some of the symptoms, or rid them for a few days, but eventually the symptoms crept back so had to find something more permanent.
So far, over the last 20 + years I have searched, this is the only one that has touched all the symptoms and has helped to maintain stability for me.
I have been taking this product now for over 10 years and the results have been consistent. -

Wed, April 1, 2009 - 1:25 PMYes!
Acupuncture treatments can be great.
My hot flashes dissapeared after only 2 treatments. They took months to crawl back. So..every one month and a half..I have a session. Plus I use Black Cohash and Angelica( Dong Quai) ...plus i'am tying to get more Omege 3 in the diet.
Also..the acupuncturist mentioned.that sugar was my enemy. I knew that..but boy it it hard to kick.
ladies run to the closest acupuncturist
cheers
