I would recommend begin by attending Pow Wow's so that the elders can get to know you, and you them. Then afer a time, the one you seek will look for you. Thats how it works.

Nicole, I don't know any in San Diego, but I know of some in Northern Ca. up by Volcano, Jackson around that area. The Miwok elders still teach the old ways.
